Nuclear Island Civil Works:

Overall view of NICB

The Nuclear Island houses totally 17 buildings, out of which     eight buildings namely Reactor Containment Building,Steam    Generator Buildings (2Nos), Electrical Buildings (2Nos),Control   Building, Radioactive Waste Building and Fuel Building are     connected together as a single structure on a common raft and is called Nuclear Island Connected Buildings (NICB). The common raft foundation covers an area of 100m X 100m, and the operating floor level is at EL 30m.

The Reactor Vault (RV) is the critical civil structure in PFBR which houses all the reactor assembly components.  The Safety Vessel,  which weighs 165MT including reflective Thermal Insulation Panels   has been successfully installed in the RV using the heavy duty crawler crane. Subsequently, the Upper Lateral Liner assembly erection     has been completed and around reactor vault a dust-free environment is created and a temporary ventilation     system has been provided.

Core Catcher (CC) & Core Support Structure (CSS) are integrated with Main Vessel (MV) and the welding of MV cooling pipes has been completed and the MV was lowered into SV from a distance of 57m.

Subsequent to erection of main vessel in Reactor vault the next major milestone achieved is erection of Thermal baffle. Thermal Baffle is to provide annular passage for the cold Sodium, which is circulated to cool the main vessel. It is made up of stainless steel 316LN with two concentric cylinder shells of diameter 12.44m and 12.67 m respectively with a height of 5m. The welding of Thermal Baffle with Main Vessel is also completed.
